The journey to North Caicos is in two parts. Firstly, guests must fly to the international airport on Providenciales (“Provo”, the adjacent island), and then take a fifteen-minute internal flight to North Caicos.
Provo is a 75 minute flight from Miami, under 3 hours from Charlotte, North Carolina and 3 hours from New York and Boston. The flight from Toronto (direct during the winter months) takes about 4 hours. Direct flights, both outbound and return, are operated by British Airways from London Heathrow on Sundays.
Details of the short hop to North Caicos will be given to prospective guests. There is also a ferry service from Leaward, on Providenciales, to North Caicos . On arrival at North Caicos you will be met by Mr Mac Campbell, the caretaker of La Villa Rose. He will take you to the house and he and Nicky Gardiner will be responsible for looking after you during your stay.
The Island North Caicos is a 41-square-mile island in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The first thing that strikes visitors about the island is its apparent isolation from civilisation. While there are several hotels and restaurants (the larger of which accept credit cards). Recently The Turks and Caicos Bank has opened a branch in Bottle Creek approximately 8 miles from La Villa Rose. The currency is US dollars. The island has not been spoilt by sprawling seafront developments despite its proximity to the booming Providenciales. The locals all know one another and there is a genuine sense of community. The people are the friendliest, most welcoming group that you will find anywhere in the world, and crime is virtually non-existent.
The population is approximately 1500, many of whom live in one of the four main settlements at Bottle Creek, Whitby, Kew and Sandy Point. Whitby beach is a seven mile stretch of white sand which you will often have to yourself. Three tiny islands, known as Three Mary’s Cays, have good snorkeling and the second hosts a huge osprey nest. The island’s flamingos, frequently congregate at Flamingo Pond, where there is a special viewpoint (about a mile from the house) from which these fascinating birds can be observed. A window into the island’s history can be found at the ruins of Wades Green sugar plantation next to Kew, one of the most successful plantations of the loyalist era.
North Caicos has a tropical climate, with an average yearly temperature of 83F (28C). There is very little variation between the seasons but the hottest months are September and October when 90-95F is possible. However the Easterly trade winds provide enough of a breeze at this time to prevent the heat becoming oppressive. The Turks and Caicos islands are a colony of the British crown, so the local language is English and driving is on the left-hand side, although you will rarely meet another car on the road!
